Herniated Disc

Everything you need to know

Sometimes called a slipped, bulging, or ruptured disc, a herniated disc is a condition that can occur anywhere along the spine but most often occurs in the lower back. When a herniated disc bulges out toward the spinal canal it puts pressure on sensitive spinal nerves that can lead to pain. Acute tears, ruptured disc material, and even disc pressure may cause a cascade of inflammatory signals leading to pain and sharp muscle spasms.

Recovery recommendations

Although a herniated disc can be very painful, most people feel much better within just a few weeks or months of non-surgical treatment. Initial treatment may include:

  • 1 to 2 days of bedrest
  • Use of short term back bracing
  • Patient education and activity modification
  • Patient education and activity modification
  • Pain medication (analgesics)
  • Physical therapy
  • Epidural injection procedures

When is surgery needed?

Only a small percentage of patients with lumbar disc herniation require surgery. Spine surgery is typically recommended only after a period of nonsurgical treatment has not released painful symptoms. Advanced, minimally invasive surgeries using state-of-the-art techniques are utilized at Ortho Spine Life to ensure quick and easy recovery.
